Underground hip hop is one of the most exciting diversions available in the form of music. Much is known and appreciated about this art form. However the beauty of underground hip hop or that which sets it apart from its mainstream counterparts is its language in the form of its lyrics. The language used is rich and inventive in the true sense of the terms. Its richness comes from the rather impressive sources it banks on for some of its metaphors sparing neither the secular nor the profane. The metaphors are usually used for money often referred to as “cream” and for education. They also find considerable inspiration from various religions and religious rites, even those such as voodoo. In fact, Just about every underground hip hop artist has his own distinct word play growing around themes such as commercialization of water that inspired the famed band Mos Def to make an album around it. Satire is also a major component of their phrases and is established with the likes of internal rhymes. Why much has not been written or noted about these styles of writing is because their topics that rise from murderous poverty stricken lives of the streets salvage much of the listener’s attention and appeal to them a lot. So much so that the powerful, fresh and inventive language of the rapper; often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. There is this constant hope amongst the rappers that their appealing language which seems complicated when analyzed may inspire youngsters educate them and elevate their listeners. They aim to spread social message even though amongst the community exists this knowledge expressed vividly through their lyrics that even though there is future for the underground hip hop community there is no future for the individual that associates himself with it. Now, a word on their slang. The underground hip hop slang has become a jargon that flourishes in the streets. The knowledge of this slang is an added advantage for both the listener and the budding artist. This is something nurtured for the community by the community of underground hip hop artists. It also states strongly the vitality of the culture that it claims to be its genesis through its richness and energy. If one looks around today, one would notice that even the dominant culture uses slang propagated here. Of course that in itself says volumes about the gripping nature and steadfast growth underground hip hop has shown over the last two decades. The metaphors are easily accessible while the knowledge of slang helps in its understanding; the ignorance of the same does nothing to bar one from interpreting the rich lyrics. One might wonder about the significance of the analysis of the language of a style that derives its success from its beats and themes. The answer to that lies in the statement that, it’s the first thing that a casual listener will find when he takes a dip beneath the many and textures of rhymes and rhythm.

The underground rap artists are known to use such mythical connotations to describe themes such as love, relations and bonds. One interesting usage is in the interpretation of blackness by Mos Def. Their rhyme goes like this: “black like my baby girl’s stare, black like the veil that the muslimina wear” also, Nas in one of their albums compared himself with Jesus. He implied something to the effect that Christ’s crucifixion was similar to his difficult and tumultuous life. Such examples are rampant through the history of the hip hop industry that had left a mark for themselves through the nineties and into the two thousands. They add to the richness and intensity of the lyrics and rhymes that had grabbed the attention of all at the pinnacle of its glory. Such a dimension is quite unique to underground hip hop. It says volumes about what they know, what they believe in and why they state the truths that they usually do state only to attain the scorn of outsiders. It could indeed have those who are cynical of this form of music, in awe. This is simply because most people miss out on the depth and subtle notions that make for this. Another interesting fact is perhaps the fact that these mythologies are always updated to imply current happenings and events. For instance, As a result of the pre nineties movement to make the minorities aware of their background also left an indelible impression in the underground hip hop music and found a stable place there. There has thus been a conversation between the underground rap artists and their audiences in action through the social commentary they stick to through their music. This is quite a contradiction then to the perception that the genius of underground hip hop is the art of making something out of nothing. That’s simply a bland statement rising to show the restriction and sabotaged atmosphere that welcomes the spirit that makes the underground hip hop step outside the shadows of their commercial hip hop counterparts. None of this intensity and seriousness that is constantly attached to the lyrics of underground hip hop takes away from the charm it holds for the young. They are for ever entranced by this kind of music. One must appreciate it. Rare as they are and rare as they will be.

Underground hip hop or underground rap as it is commonly call is a collective term given to all The hip hop music production beyond the commercial circuit. Beyond the music, graffiti, b-boying or break dancing, turntablism and beat boxing are modes through which it is promoted. The artists of this genre are the very competitive counterparts of their well established commercial counterparts. Obviously enough, there exists a difference in the subject matter of these artistes who tend to focus more on issues such as family, politics and relationships. They are surprisingly self-critical and usually more introspective. Their style is diverse, emerging from battle rapping. They use jazz, funk, electronica and techno genres to derive their distinct technique. Also, traditional hip hop music is greatly popular for its beats that can be used by those who follow underground hip hop.

The identity of these artist’s are said to be anti commercial in nature. It is their belief that to stay true and real to their art, there is a necessity to maintain the rawness and authenticity associated to the street connection. Its origin can be traced to some of the events that took place in the 1990s and their parallel growth with what is called as the gangsta rap (gangster rap). While N.W.A was pioneering the songs that would be called gangsta rap, rappers such as Organized Konfusion, Del Tha Funky Homosapien and Common were creating the sounds of what was later termed as Underground hip hop. The topic of underground rap in 1990s would remain incomplete without some mention of the artistes such as Living Legends, Freestyle Fellowship crews,Nut Rageous, Fat Beats, Stone Throw, Anticon and Def Jux that have paved the path for future generations to follow. In 1996 the Scribble Jam which was a festival that cultivated this art form and promoted it with a lot of enthusiasm and belief, was organized with fantastic results. Therefore it was known that the mass appeal for underground hip hop ran high and deep. Thus the 1990s maybe considered as the era that led to the formation of underground hip hop.

The internet also played a monumental role in the process, publicizing underground hip hop to the maximum extent possible. This was due to the easy accessibility of this feature and the attraction it held to reach out to a huge mass of audience and fans. Thus, 1998 1999 saw the substantial rise of audio sites such as UndergroundHipHop.com. File sharing sites such as Napster were quick to add on to the unprecedented growth of the form. The 2000s saw the art reaching the mainstream at last. In the decade, many underground hip hop artists found their music and albums feature in the billboard 200. The Rhmesayers Entertainment signed a distribution contract with the Warner music group in 2007 which allowed many underground artistes to be put under bigger labels. Grayskul, Cannibal Ox, J Dilla and Erykah Badu are some of the most known artistes of the early stages of the decade.
